The Company of the Mistery of Makers of Playing Cards of the City of London was founded by charter granted by King Charles I on 22 October 1628. Since 1882, a presentation set of cards has been presented annually at the banquet which marks the installation of the new Master and Wardens of the Company. Nowadays, a portrait of the Master for the year appears on the Ace of Spades, with his name and those of the two Wardens and the Clerk appearing below. The back design of these cards usually shows some important event or anniversary which has occurred during the preceding twelve months, and also often incorporates the Arms of the Company. We have supplied illustrations of some of these packs.
Click on the picture or the title of the pack to see more information and more pictures where available.
The following packs are offered as originally presented, i.e. boxed double packs in mint condition, unless otherwise stated. In instances where limited stock is available, orders will be treated on a strictly first come first served basis.

Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards 2000
by WCMPC Cat Ref: 20000 |
Commemoration of the Millennium.
The 2000th anniversary of the birth of Christ is marked by the use of a selection of the many different crosses used in heraldry. The large black cross is a Celtic cross and upon it are, at the top, a cross potent, on the left, a Maltese cross, and on the right, a cross formy or paty; beneath the star (which is the central feature to remind us that it is Christ's birth rather than His death that is being celebrated) is a patriarchal cross and beneath the arms of the Company is the cross, without any qualification, that we associate with England & St George. The design also includes a cross bottony, a cross patonce, a cross fourchy, a cross recercely, a cross-crosslet, a cross flory, a cross pommy and a cross moline.

Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards 2002

When Cards became "Collectables".
Master of the Company 2002-3: Roderick Somerville, M.A.
The design chosen for this year's cards celebrates several things. Above all, however, a deliberate effort has been made to recall the style of design used on many of the Company's cards prior to 1900 when the Arms of the Company were always the most prominent feature.
For the first time in about 20 years this year's WCMPC packs have been both designed and printed in the U.K. |
